Seeking the highest possible ratio of fun to power

ABOUT
Commander Labs
For us, Commander is at its best when every deck at the table tells a different story. But lately, that hasn’t been my experience. Smothering Tithe. Dockside Extortionist. Rhystic Study.
Different commanders, same decks.
With so many powerful tools available—like EDHREC—deckbuilding has never been easier. But somewhere along the way, it also started to feel… flatter. Optimized lists began to converge into the same 20–30 cards for each color. Games became more predictable. And the sense of discovery that makes Commander special started to fade.
We didn’t want to stop playing Commander. We just wanted it to feel surprising again. Both as players and as a deckbuilders.
That’s where Commander Labs comes in.
Commander Labs is an exploration of the strange, the overlooked, and the underestimated corners of Magic: The Gathering. The goal isn’t to build the fastest or most optimized decks. It is to uncover strategies that are decidedly off-meta — decks that are fresh, creative, and deeply rewarding to pilot.
Here you’ll find:
-
Commanders built in ways you wouldn’t expect
-
Cards that look unassuming but power entire engines
-
Decks that win from angles your opponents don’t see coming
These aren’t jank piles. They’re cohesive, competitive strategies that trade raw efficiency for originality and depth.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of “must-have” cards, or if you’re just drawn to weird synergies, you’re in the right place.
At Commander Labs, we’re chasing one thing: the highest possible ratio of fun to power.
Let’s get creative.
